Crowns in San Francisco & Glendale, CA

A dental crown is a dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth or functions as the visible component of a dental implant. Dental crowns can be made from different materials, such as metal, ceramic, resin, or porcelain. Dental crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They can also be used in conjunction with dental implants.

How Does a Dental Crown Work?

A dental crown, also known as a tooth cap or tooth crown, is a covering that is placed over an existing tooth to strengthen and protect the tooth from damage. A dental crown covers a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength and to improve its appearance. It does this by being fitted and held firmly and securely in place over the natural tooth.

Crowns can be made of metal, ceramic, or porcelain. Porcelain is typically the most realistic-looking option and blends in with the rest of your teeth well. However, they are more fragile than the other materials. Ceramic crowns are also an aesthetically pleasing option as they are also a metal-free material. Metal crowns are typically the most economical choice and are highly durable. They can withstand biting pressure and wear from chewing very well. They are also the most common material used for children’s dental crowns.

What Do Dental Crowns Address?

Dental crowns are restorations that can address cavities that have become too large for fillings to repair. Crowns can also restore a tooth that has been damaged so badly that much of the visible structure has been compromised. A tooth that has weakened after having undergone root canal therapy would also benefit from a dental crown. Finally, a dental crown can replace a missing tooth when it is attached to a dental implant.

Process

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two appointments. The first appointment is the consultation, and the second is to place the permanent crown. During the first appointment, the dentist examines your teeth to ensure the condition warrants the placement of a dental crown. If a crown is necessary, an impression is taken of your tooth. The impression is then sent off to a lab where the crown is created. Meanwhile, a temporary crown is placed over the tooth while the permanent one is made.

When the permanent crown is ready, you will return to your dentist’s office to have it placed. Once it is in place, it should feel natural and comfortable. Our dentist will then likely give you instructions on how to care for your crown properly. This may include avoiding certain foods or using certain mouthwashes.

When cared for properly, a dental crown can last for many years. It may need to be repaired or replaced at some point in the future, but with proper dental care, it should function for a long time.
